Piers Newman, MSc (Family Therapy) is a Systemic Family Psychotherapist in England. He is an intermediate level family therapy teacher and supervisor. As is evident from this discussion, Piers has a special interest in working with crisis families and families with parents with traumatic childhoods. In our discussion, Piers takes us through the development of family therapy to where it recently adopted CSJ as an ideologically-informed practice. We discuss these worrying trends in greater detail and consider a real-life case where time-tested family therapy reaped positive results. This was possible precisely because the family involved were related to as fellow humans, and not mere tokens of identity groups within a dystopian system of oppressors and victims.
