The Woke as a Narcissistically Regressed Large-Group with Dr. Lucas Klein

Dr. Lucas Klein is a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst and former forensic psychologist. He is an author in psychiatric research, psychological testing and public health, and the owner and host of his podcast, Real Clear Podcast. In this episode we take a deep dive from a psychoanalytic perspective on narcissistic large-group regression, the precursors to such regression in the West, the psychotic aspects of such large-group regression, and psychoanalysis/psychology’s own complicity in participating in such societal disease. 1. Hi and thank you for this interesting discussion. Long while since I heard Kernberg being referred to in this context. I’m thinking also of Group Analysis which has much to contribute to our understanding of the emergence of the psychotic in groups though I don’t have any particular writer in mind. I would like to direct you to the work of Rob Weatherill here in Ireland. His latest book “Lacan in the End Times: In the Name of the Absent Father” (Routledge. London & New York. 2023). Rob, a practicing analyst, trainer and supervisor (Ref APPI) comes from a Kleinian background. In this and his previous books he treats the current social/societal crisis and the issue of loss of authority and banishment of “the father”. As far back as 1994 Rob published his book “Cultural Collapse” (Free Association Books) where he already begins to address the issue of where society is heading. I would highly recommend his work to you because much of your conversation speaks directly to his subject matter and with the same urgency. See also, “The Anti-Oedipus Complex: Lacan, Critical Theory and Postmodernism” ( Routledge. 2017)
    Thank you.

    • Good morning Derek

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I have yet to understand why Lacanian Psychoanalysts (mostly American) have endorsed this perverse approach to the Symbolic with such unrestrained resolve. Maybe you can shed some light on that.

We will certainly get hold of your suggested books.

I could not find your contact details. Since you’re also in Ireland, maybe we can meet up sometime. You’re welcome to send me your contact details to jaco@jvanzylpsych.com.

      Regards
