An important open letter has just been published protesting the direction that the APA is taking – please read it and add your signature.

The APA, due to its size and influence, is the flagship of the professional therapy bodies, internationally. Naturally enough, activists have sought to commandeer this prize vessel. The ideological slant of its recent policies and practice guidance bears witness to this capture. (see their heavily criticised 2018 guidance on working with boys and men). Now there is an activist captain, Thema Bryant, at the helm of APA steering the ship straight onto the dangerous reefs of decolinisation.

However, the pushback is growing – critiques are being published in the academic literature (see Nina Silander’s interview on the CTA podcast). And now there is an opportunity for disaffected practitioners and concerned members of the general public to make their displeasure known through signing the petition/open letter.

CTA urges everyone to put their name to this petition. If the APA does not course correct, it will founder on the reefs and break up through destructive postmodern processes of deconstruction and dismantling. Maybe, this process is too far gone now but, on the other hand, we are seeing at least one professional body that is signalling a new course – the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy (UKCP) has just issued a statement committing itself to protecting the rights of practitioners and students holding gender critical beliefs. Everyone needs to make their feelings known publically now.
