In this episode I am joined by Nick Oprychal. In this video we discuss Nick’s thesis that the so-called woke revolution has already happened. The rhetoric of woke has already captured major institutions. But now we have neo-liberalism espousing the ideology of critical social justice while protecting its elite power in a status quo economic system and doing nothing meaningful to change that system. Meanwhile, there is a populist movement reacting against this. Nick suggests the image of Jeff Bezos wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt. So, we have a polarity of competing resentment cultures, neo-liberalism in the guise of cultural deconstruction and national populism. We discuss how this culture war and the woke agenda are impacting psychotherapy. Later in our conversation we talk about how a transpersonal perspective provides an avenue beyond this polarized battle of identity politics.

Nick Opyrchal is a psychotherapist in private practice, academic marker and supervisor. A final year doctoral student, Nick’s research portfolio looks at the impact of culture wars, left-modern identity politics and national populism on psychotherapy in general, and transpersonal psychotherapy in particular. He has previously written for Merion West and is a contributing author to Cynical Therapies. Before becoming a psychotherapist Nick was a professional Thai boxer and martial arts instructor.
