Prof. Jon Mills has recently posted a scathing essay in Equiano taking a psychological perspective on DEI. In it he equates the terms, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion with discrimination, exclusion and indoctrination. His essay reflects on each term and considers how they have been redefined resulting in ‘a retrograde form of gaslighting the public that continues to fuel psychopathology in popular culture.’ He includes a step by step analysis of standard DEI trainings pointing out that there is no evidence that these are effective, in fact, they are more likely to increase division and poor working relationships in the workplace.
Jon’s analysis is a helpful contribution to all of us in the therapy professions struggling with the destructive impact of DEI on therapy services, our professional bodies, and the training institutions – see recent CTA posts about student experiences here and here.
Below are verbatim extracts from his piece – read the whole article here.
‘By identifying, naming, and condemning western white races for all the woes inflicted on humanity, which is tantamount to the internalized oppressor within that needs to be regurgitated, white-hatred becomes a justified moral expression of resistance, liberation, and transcendence over a fantasied tyranny derived from contextualized past history but has no appearance in its modern-day form.’
‘Hasty false generalizations and appeal to emotional hysterics with no respect for context, nuance, or substance typically contaminate any rational discourse let alone foster intellectual debate.’
‘A downward spiral appears throughout all topics in the culture wars. When questioning a member of the LGBTQ+ community on their views, you are either slandered a cis heteronormative white colonial oppressor, misogynistic, homophobic, or deemed a transphobe. When gender-critical feminists challenge the transgender narrative that there is no such thing as differences in biological sex, they are sent to the gallows pole.’
