A new therapist directory for the UK has just been launched by James Esses. Just Therapy, as its founder explains, ‘is born out of a desire to go back to what therapy should be – effective, ethical, and free from ideology.’

Here at CTA we have been predicting the development of parallel structures in the therapy field. The notion of ‘parallel structures’ was coined by Vaclav Havel in his seminal book, The Power of the Powerless. Havel was a Czech dissident and his book is a rousing call to resist totalitarianism. He proposed that one way forward would be to create separate social structures for people who actively resist the dominant ideology.

This new therapist directory, set up for practitioners using traditional/classical approaches, is an example of creating a parallel structure operating alongside established legacy therapy bureacracies which have been captured by a political ideology. We look forward to more of these developments in the therapy field.
